Ever notice your eyelid giving you a little spasm out of nowhere? That’s called eyelid myokymia—involuntary contractions of the muscle around the eye (usually the Orbicularis oculi).
Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes:
• Motor units in the orbicularis oculi fire asynchronously (~3-8 Hz) causing fine undulating muscle contractions.
• Triggers include fatigue, stress, excess caffeine or alcohol, eye strain, dry eyes, bright light or surface irritation.
• In most cases this is benign and self-limited. The neural circuitry (including the facial nerve) remains intact and there’s no muscle weakness or permanent damage.
• Rarely, if twitching is persistent, widespread, or accompanied by other symptoms (vision changes, facial twitching), it could signal a deeper neurological condition (eg. Benign essential blepharospasm or nerve compression).
Take-away: It’s usually your eyelid muscles and nerves just being extra sensitive. Give those eyes a break, reduce stimulants, man...
