Ever wondered how the cooling fins on your electronics are made? 🧊 Let’s peel back the process of a heat sink—from raw metal to precision cooling solution.
👉 Step 1: Material selection — Most heat sinks use aluminum (lightweight, good conductivity) or copper (higher conductivity, heavier) because they’re really efficient at pulling heat away.
👉 Step 2: Forming the structure — There are several methods:
• Extrusion: pushing softened metal through a die to get the profile (especially for aluminum)
• Skiving: cutting thin slices from a solid block and bending them up to form dense fins, great for performance-critical parts. (what’s shown here)
• Die-casting, stamping, forging: used depending on cost, volume, complexity.
👉 Step 3: Machining & finishing — After forming the core shape you’ll often see finishing operations: CNC milling, drilling holes, surface treatments (anodizing, plating) to improve look, durability, heat transfer.
👉 Step 4: Heat-sink design optimisation ...
