We often hear two mind-blowing facts about our universe. Let’s break them down:
⏳ Age
• The standard cosmological model (ΛCDM) gives an age of about 13.8 billion years (13.787 ± 0.020 Gyr).
• This comes from measurements of the cosmic microwave background and calculations of cosmic expansion history.
• Some speculative models propose a much older universe (e.g. ~26.7 billion years) but these are not accepted consensus.
🌌 Size (observable universe)
• We can only see part of the universe — this region is called the observable universe.
• Its current diameter is estimated at ~93 billion light-years.
• The radius to the “edge” (comoving distance) is ~46.5 billion light-years.
• Why is the observable size so much bigger than 13.8 billion light-years? Because space itself has expanded. Light that started traveling billions of years ago comes from regions now much farther away.
