Today we celebrate a major part of Australian History. A man who achieved greatness both during and after his life, Eddie 'Koiki' Mabo fought for recognition of rights of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal peoples to traditional ownership of their land and waters.
Mabo challenged the Australian legal system over 10 years, and on 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia made a historical decision in his favour and recognized that Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal peoples have traditional rights to their land and this right never extinguished by early British settlement in Australia.
Mabo was a man with great vision, courage and determination, who never wavered from the grueling challenge against the Australian legal system and against all odds.
The Mabo case changed some of the basic foundation of Australia's legal system and also brought attention to the plight of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
He will forever be remembered as one of the 'greats' in Australia...
