Thailand’s Supreme Court has ordered former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to serve one year in jail after he escaped prison for a previous conviction by being inappropriately hospitalized.
Thaksin returned to Thailand from exile in 2023 and was meant to have served an eight-year sentence for corruption. But on the first day he was transferred to a hospital and released six months later after being granted parole.
The ruling deals a severe blow to one of the country’s most influential families, coming less than two weeks after the tycoon’s daughter was ousted as prime minister by the Constitutional Court for ethics violations.
Analysts say it is also likely to affect the fortunes of the family’s Pheu Thai political party as the nation prepares for an expected general election in the next six months.
