On June 3, South Koreans elected Lee Jae Myung as their 21st president, following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol -- who attempted to impose martial law in early December.
Lee’s left-leaning Democratic Party has traditionally favored big government, and the new president had advocated for universal basic income during his previous run for office. This time, his messaging shifted more toward the center.
The lawyer-turned-politician has pledged to revive South Korea's sluggish economy by expanding government spending, and has vowed to lead the country out of its political and economic crisis over his five-year term.
