After I shot my last photo, this STEVE turned a bright, vibrant red as it hovered over the night sky for nearly 10 minutes before vanishing into the night. . What is a STEVE? STEVE is short for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement and isn't an aurora but a "skyglow" created by heated and shining particles in the ionosphere.
