Et voilà. In France, the words “happy” & “Bastille (prison)” are a contradiction in terms, non? This holiday isn’t celebrating a prison that signified an era of terror and a royal institution starving everyone. It’s pretty much an insult to say.

So if today’s celebration isn’t about the storming of the Bastille prison (although it did take place on the 14th of July 1789 which marked the beginning of the French Revolution)... what the heck is it?
