A couple from Lenox and their twin babies have reached a major milestone that's best described as a miracle. Cristal Alvarez and Junior Mendez are getting ready to leave the hospital with their newborn baby boy Jacob, who was born weighing one pound and six ounces, after receiving care in the neonatal intensive care unit at unitypointdsm Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. His twin sister Luna, who was born weighing one pound and three ounces, hopefully won't be too far behind. Jacob and Luna were born in January after 22 weeks of pregnancy, just 10 days after the hospital began providing active treatment for babies born so young, who require intense specialized treatment to survive. They were the first babies born at 22 weeks to be treated at the hospital, as the number of health care providers offering such care has grown in recent years.
