Heaven Sent. It’s funny how a derby can change things. And they always seem to come at just the right time. Two weeks ago, Angel City boasted a meager three wins in all of 2023. Manager Freya Coombe was sacked ahead of the first of two SoCal derbies in June, and up stepped Becki Tweed as interim. No pressure. She’d worked her way up through every level of soccer in the US — youth, academy, college, and assistant coach in NWSL. Ultimately, the last-gasp win against the Wave on her head coaching debut seems to have breathed new life into the club. On Wednesday, they played the Wave for the second time in two weeks, and they took care of business once more. So far, Tweed’s thrived in this baptism of fire. But the players themselves deserve all the praise too. With fresh faces on the field due to the World Cup, the team has responded, and they’re now undefeated through three games.
