Johnson held a news conference alongside Thurgood Marshall in the White House Rose Garden to announce Marshall as his nominee to the Supreme Court. On October 2, 1967, Thurgood Marshall took the official judicial oath of the U.S. Supreme Court, becoming the first Black person to serve on the Court.
