Mingus Mapps, a first-term Portland commissioner and former political science professor, said Wednesday he will run for mayor next year, making him the first declared candidate in a race that is all but certain to center around the series of crises that continue to confront Oregon’s largest city. In an interview with The Oregonian/OregonLive, Mapps, 54, criticized Portland’s “status quo,” highlighting the city’s increase in homicides, shootings and property crimes, the thousands of people living unsheltered and a growing drug crisis that has led to more than 500 overdose deaths in Multnomah County in the last year.
