Do you know which famous Elvis Presley song has Virginia ties? If you guessed “Promised Land,” you’re absolutely correct! That’s why this week’s Virginia history tidbit features the King of Rock and Roll 🎸 In the 1970s hit, the singer croons lines like “I left my home in Norfolk, Virginia, California on my mind,” and “Los Angeles, get me Norfolk, Virginia, Tidewater 4-1009/ Tell the folks back home this is the Promised Land callin’/ And the poor boy is on the line.” Presley’s cover of the song tells the story of a young man with fame and fortune on his mind. Yet, the protagonist faces a multitude of struggles on his journey across America, including motor issues, train rides, and flights. We hope Elvis didn’t truly face any of those experiences when he visited close by, performing five times at the Hampton Coliseum in the 1970s.
