“I love globalism. It allows for freer exchanges of ideas, goods, products, services, art, music, food and many other amazing cultural derivatives. The only problem is that it happens on a globe — a globe that completes a rotation on its axis (almost) every 24 hours. There is too much variation in the amount of sunlight that Earth’s nearly 8 billion inhabitants experience at any given point in time. Which doesn’t sound so bad given that we have electricity and lighting for when there is no sunlight. Unfortunately, lamps and bulbs are no match for a circadian rhythm that has been evolutionarily sharpened throughout the past few million years. My body doesn’t understand that 11 p.m. for me isn’t a late-night office hour for my professor in Denver. The group members for my final project brokered a deal with our teammate in Hong Kong — Monday mornings for her but Sunday evenings for us. I’m not sure which one is worse.
