Happy Indigenous People’s Day! This might just seem like another beautiful view, but this land was originally inhabited by Indigenous tribes. In 2019, Vermont started officially celebrating this holiday to honor the Vermonters who have called this home for 12,000+ years. It’s important to recognize that as we enjoy this holiday weekend.
⭐️ It’s estimated that 10,000 Native Americans used to live here, but the combination of foreign diseases, an influx of settlers, colonies fighting over land, a series of wars, and forced sterilization created a mass migration to Canada. Today, only about 2,100 Indigenous people live here out of a population of 645,000.
⭐️ Vermont has no official reservations anymore. Our little state isn’t usually on people’s radar in terms of Indigenous history, stolen land, and eugenics, but it happened here just like most other states. Vermont isn’t mostly white by accident.
