None of this required Nintendo's source code or Nintendo's permission. π§ π
Super Mario 64 launched in 1996 and Nintendo never released the code behind it. Around 2018 a volunteer crew of speedrunners and reverse engineers started decompiling the game, reading raw assembly and rewriting every single function in C. The only way to prove a function was correct was to compile it and check the result against the original cartridge byte for byte. No partial credit. It took about two years.
That finished source is why Mario's original 1996 movement code can be dropped into a modern engine and run natively on a Meta Quest 3. Passthrough cameras put the level in the room. Hand tracking deletes the controller.
One decompiled game. Every dead console lined up behind it.
