They bolted a steel fork under the car to stop it sliding. ⚙️ 🇫🇮
In 1986, two-time German rally champion Harald Demuth drove a production Audi 100 CS quattro up the Pitkävuori ski jump in Kaipola, Finland. 37.5 degrees of packed snow, 154 feet up, on studded winter tires and a manual gearbox with no electronic aids.
The system doing the work was quattro permanent all wheel drive. A center differential splits engine torque between both axles, so whichever tires still have bite keep pulling the car forward. The brakes could not hold the car on that slope, so the handbrake drove that steel fork into the ice instead. Demuth ran the climb 13 times for the cameras.
One frozen ramp. Four driven wheels. Forty years of imitators.
