You can watch them spinning in open air. ๐Ÿ”ด ๐Ÿ›  This is a Ducati XDiavel running with its timing covers removed. Those toothed belts drive the camshafts, and they are designed to run completely dry, sealed away from the oil system, which is why the engine can operate fully exposed like this. If one ever skips a tooth, the valves and pistons meet. The belts feed Ducati's desmodromic valve system, where every valve gets one rocker arm to push it open and a second one to pull it shut. Eight valves, sixteen clearances, every one of them set by hand. The clear cover on the side is machined in Italy from a single block of aluminum. Riders call it the oil aquarium, a window onto the wet clutch spinning in its own oil bath. Italian precision, running with the covers off. Love Technology?
