Ancient empires relied on occupations now mostly obsolete. 🏛
From Mesopotamia to Rome and Egypt, specialized work included carving accounts into clay tablets, reading omens from birds, preparing bodies for mummification, and guarding Vesta’s sacred fire for 30 years. Urban demand also sustained fish-sauce production, cloth cleaning in urine vats, and royal purple dye made from sea snails.
These occupations were built into temple ritual, court politics, and preindustrial manufacturing. Most faded as the states, religions, and production systems behind them disappeared, and many survive now mainly in texts and archaeology.
