Many modern country names replaced older imperial or colonial-era labels. ๐ŸŒ Ceylon became Sri Lanka in 1972, Burma informed the UN in 1989 that it had changed its name to Myanmar, and Swaziland became Eswatini in 2018. Iran formally asked foreign governments to use Iran instead of Persia in 1935, while Upper Volta became Burkina Faso in 1984. These changes usually followed independence, constitutional change, regime shifts, or campaigns to align state names with local language and national identity. The result was more than a map update: diplomatic records, school atlases, and international institutions had to adopt the new names. #WorldHistory #Geography #CountryNames #PoliticalHistory #GlobalAffairs
