1960s air travel mixed luxury with high fares. ✈️
Commercial flying in the 1960s operated with full meal service, formal dress norms, minimal security, smoking in the cabin, cockpit visits for children, and drinks poured into real glassware.
That experience came at a steep price. A New York to London round-trip economy fare in 1960 could cost about $350, or roughly $3,800 in today’s money, while similar routes today can appear around $800. Air travel lost some ceremony over time, but it became cheaper, more accessible, and safer for far more passengers.
