When planes felt like living rooms at 35,000 feet ✈️
In the 1970s, Japan Airlines built a 747 first class lounge in the nose with sofas and art panels, and crew offered Japanese style hospitality in kimono.
As demand boomed, the lounge era faded and Japan even introduced the short-range 747SR that could seat about 550 people on busy domestic runs.
For a brief stretch, flying from Tokyo meant sofas, murals, kimono service, and by decade’s end, a real bed in the sky.
