At what point do we admit that some fraternities are starting to look a whole lot more like gangs than student organizations?
Look at what’s happening right now. A former Cornell student has filed a lawsuit accusing seven former Chi Phi members of SA, allegations that have prompted prosecutors to reopen the criminal investigation. At Penn State, we’ve recently seen criminal charges tied to an alleged drug-trafficking operation involving fraternity organizations, on top of continued concerns surrounding hazing.
Obviously, not every fraternity or fraternity member is involved in this kind of behavior. But when stories like these keep surfacing, I think it’s fair to ask some bigger questions about fraternity culture and the systems surrounding it.
Do fraternities still have a place on college campuses, or is it time to rethink the entire system?
Tell me what you think in the comments. And if you’ve been part of a fraternity, I especially want to hear your perspective.
