The Michigan Senate voted Dec. 16 to restore $634 million in work project funding that was axed Dec. 10 by the House GOP, with five Republican senators joining Democrats in trying to reverse an action by the House Appropriations Committee that sparked outrage. The legislation now moves to the House, where Speaker Matt Hall has broadly defended the cuts, while saying some of the money could be restored. The money was appropriated in the 2025 budget but remained unspent on Sept. 30, the end of the 2025 fiscal year. The State Budget Office in November had requested that a total of $2.7 billion of such unspent funds be designated as "work projects," giving state departments and grant recipients more time to spend the money.
