A fireworks tradition of nearly seven decades brought crowds and a festive mood to downtown Detroit to await the moment when the darkened skies would erupt with color. Thousands of spectators gathered along the Detroit River, eyes fixed upward for one of the city's most cherished traditions as the skies darkened and suddenly were filled with explosive bursts of color just after 10 p.m. With music accompanying the show, starbursts and columns jutting from the barges into the sky and looping back toward the river punctured the night in a cascade of sight and sound.
