February is #BlackHistoryMonth, and today, we're highlighting John Hopkins, Sr., the historical figure #BehindTheName of John Hopkins Middle School in St. Petersburg.
Born in Bartow, Florida, Mr. Hopkins was a lifelong educator, advocate and organizer. He served as the principal of multiple Pinellas schools, including 16th Street Middle School. Mr. Hopkins was also instrumental in many community organizations, including the Florida State Teachers Association, the Pinellas County Urban League, and the St. Petersburg Economic Development Corporation.
When 16th St. Middle was rebuilt, the district renamed the school in honor of Mr. Hopkins. The building is now known today as John Hopkins Middle School.
