February is #BlackHistoryMonth, and today, we're highlighting Jonathan Clarkson Gibbs, the historical figure #BehindTheName of Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg.
A Dartmouth graduate, an abolitionist involved in the Underground Railroad, and a Tallahassee City Council member, Mr. Gibbs was instrumental in African American history and considered one of the most powerful Black officeholders in Florida during Reconstruction. Mr. Gibbs notably served as Florida’s first African-American Secretary of State and Superintendent of Public Instruction.
