February is #BlackHistoryMonth, and Pinellas County Schools is celebrating the generations of Black Americans who overcame adversity, made history and changed the world, starting with some names that you may recognize. Today, we're highlighting Douglas L. Jamerson, Jr., the historical figure #BehindTheName of Douglas Jamerson Elementary School in St. Petersburg. A local leader, Mr. Jamerson grew up in St. Pete before being elected to the House of Representatives in 1982. He was the first African American to be elected to the legislature from Pinellas County. He was later appointed Florida's Commissioner of Education by Governor Lawton Chiles before also serving as the Secretary of the State Department of Labor and Employment. Mr. Jamerson was a strong advocate for education and a pillar in the St. Petersburg community. Read more about Mr. Jamerson on the Jamerson Elementary website: pcsb.org/Page/4173
