All four players on the ice Sunday when Jack Hughes netted the game winner (Hughes, Werenski, Larkin and Hellebuyck) had Michigan ties. Perhaps it was fitting that directly behind the U.S. net, between several U.S. and Canadian flags hanging over a barrier in front of the first row of seats, a familiar blue flag with the maize block “M” stood out from the rest. “The Michigan connections are a staple part of this program,” Jack Hughes said, “and just for hockey as a whole across the country. So much talent comes from the state and so much development happens there.” Hughes’ goal came four days after Farmington Hills native Megan Keller netted the overtime winner for the U.S. women in their gold-medal game win.
