Democrat Garlin Gilchrist II is launching a campaign for governor Tuesday, arguing Michigan needs a "problem solver" and hoping to defy more than 40 years of struggles that lieutenant governors have had in seeking the state's top political office. Gilchrist, a 42-year-old Detroiter and a software engineer by training, was Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's running mate in both 2018 and 2022. If he's successful in the Democratic primary and general election in 2026, he will become the first Black governor of Michigan and the first former lieutenant governor to hold the job in more than four decades. More of what Gilchrist said in an interview with The Detroit News at the link in bio. #DetroitNews #Gilchrist #Whitmer #MichiganPolitics #michiganelection #michigangovernor #migov #lansing
