Explore Detroit’s rich past in our Detroit History series. This week, we’re diving into the iconic Hudson’s Department Store. From holiday window displays to the world’s tallest department store, Hudson’s was more than just a shopping destination—it was the heart of downtown Detroit.
Before there was online shopping, there was Hudson’s. Towering 25 stories over Woodward Avenue, Hudson’s wasn’t just a department store—it was THE department store. Families would ride the bus downtown just to see the legendary holiday windows, eat in the 13th-floor dining room, and maybe even catch a glimpse of Santa in Toyland. Hudson’s gave Detroit its own version of NYC’s Macy’s magic—and its legacy still lives on in our skyline and our hearts.
