Do you know anyone with a rare disease? Well, you know at least one 🙋🏾‍♀️My rare disease is Chronic ITP and I was diagnosed September 2021. Since today is Rare Disease Day, I am bringing awareness to ITP. ITP is an autoimmune bleeding disorder characterized by abnormally low levels of platelets. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks platelets as “bad guys” and destroys them. 3 out of 100,000 are diagnosed with ITP in the US annually. About 40% of all patients diagnosed with ITP are children under 10. Since my diagnosis, I’ve been hospitalized numerous times and have undergone several different treatments and medications. Some have “worked” - and I put quotes around worked because while platelet count has risen, the side effects have either put me in the hospital or have drastically affected my body and mind (hello 100mg of steroids last summer).
