A group chat among Charlotte police officers reportedly included a contest to see who could pull over the most Black drivers. More than half a dozen CMPD officers have resigned or been recommended for termination after racist texts were found on a colleague's phone, including slurs and one message that read, "our texts sound like a clan rally." Chief Estella Patterson, a Black woman who started her career in the department, called the allegations "deeply troubling." The NAACP wants stricter officer vetting, and defense attorneys want past cases involving these officers reopened. The department says its review so far hasn't found stops specifically targeting Black drivers, but critics are asking how far the problem goes.
