Ancient history meets modern tech on a project that gives the storied Italian city of Pompeii a new solar-powered lighting system. Dubbed Invisible Solar, the dazzling yet discrete solution isn’t just eco-friendly. It was designed to blend into the vast ruins of the iconic preserved city—a critical project spec given the more than 2.5 million tourists who visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site every year. Created by Italian company Dyaqua, the solar panels mimic the look of the original terracotta tiles used to build the city—before it was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. So far, the panels have been installed on the House of Cerere, the House of the Vettii and a Roman snack bar—offering a blueprint for other urban preservation projects. “We want to send a message to the world: Cultural heritage can be managed differently and in a more sustainable way,” said Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Pompeii archaeological park.
