The council is poised to direct the deprioritization of the use of city funds for arrests of individuals above the age of 21 who use or cultivate plant-based psychedelic drugs. The landmark move comes after the city’s Health, Life Enrichment, Equity & Community Committee recommended the action in a revised report released in June.  The deprioritization, however, excludes the cultivation and consumption of the mescaline-containing peyote cactus, after sustainability and poaching concerns were raised by the National Council of Native American Churches and the Indigenous Peyote Conservation Initiative. It is currently unclear how police may determine the distinction between individuals using non-peyote psychedelic drugs.
