Rob Matchett, who grew up on the South Side and still lives there, used to sit on the South Side Community Council. He attributes the spate of violence in recent years to what he calls an increase in Airbnb rentals and the renters coming from other areas. Those rentals sometimes bring trouble, Mr. Matchett said. The first weekend after he moved into his current home near 19th Street and Larkins Way, he heard loud disturbances he thought might have been due to drug activity. “South Side has changed a lot since I was a kid,” Mr. Matchett said.
