Before modern artificial turf fields, football fields that didn't utilize natural grass were not fun to play on. Many were simply green carpeting placed on concrete subfloors. Getting tackled was naturally painful, but there was another side effect. ⁣ ⁣ In 1969, Auburn introduced a new set of jerseys mostly made of a fishnet mesh material across the torso. The looser, better-breathing material was used, in part, to combat the heat that would radiate off the turf surface, especially in the early season games.⁣ ⁣ Tennessee was traditionally an early matchup for Auburn, most of the time within the first two or three games. The Volunteers played on a turf field notorious for high temperatures. The new knit jerseys didn't help overcome a strong UT team, as the Tigers would fall 45-19 that first season.⁣ ⁣ Auburn also introduced new NFL-style socks that covered the entire bare leg below the pants.
