This past weekend, a vision of mine finally came to fruition! Ever since I started volunteering with blackgirlhockeyclub blackgirlhockeyclubca , I have felt as though I have a place in Hockey, even after 22 years of feeling like an outsider! As the Co-Founder & Executive Director of BGHC Canada, I am so proud to say that this past weekend we hosted the first ever BGHC camp as we had 65 Black & BIPOC girls from all across North America join us in Toronto! For me it’s the smiles, the curls, the laughs, the braids, the CONNECTIONS they make—It brought tears of joy to my eyes to know that I played a part in providing these young black women with a space that allows them to feel welcomed, safe, and inspired! Whether it was seeing all black female coaches on one ice surface for this first time, or learning about their hair texture and type and how to take care of it in your helmet, to simply being able to see the representation around themselves, I know I will never forget this past weeken...
