Philadelphia — the city of Liberty Bell and Independence Hall — braced itself for a British Invasion this past weekend. Chelsea, Fulham, Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Brighton all touched down at Lincoln Financial Field for two days of glorious Premier League fun. Yes, Chelsea and Newcastle probably drew all the floodlights, but what a treat it was to catch some of the “grittier” PL squads. For any fan here, the only real chance to see many of these sides is all the way across pond, so having them finally present in our backyard was — strangely — a dream come true. It was the perfect balance of glitz and realism. When most fans fantasize about living in England, they imagine catching the Prem week in and week out. This weekend in Philly gave us exactly that — a wide selection of teams from every place in the standings. In the end, that’s usually what you get over there rather than just huge marquee games.
