On April 28, six Penn State students published a letter to the editor in The Daily Collegian to “declare support” for the recently resigned head of the African American studies department Michael West. West announced his resignation in April, after citing disagreements with Susan Welch Dean Clarence Lang of the College of Liberal Arts. The six students — Taran Samarth, Jake Otto, Emma Messersmith, Maggie Bond, Jessica Kim and Ahyanna Navarro-Foreman — were student marshals for the College of the Liberal Arts, which contains the department of African American studies.
