At a Roanoke County School Board meeting on Thursday, the board passed a new policy saying that all classroom decor and displays should intend to support the curriculum and learning objectives of RCPS.
Under the policy, employees may not use decor in their classrooms to “advocate for their personal beliefs about political views, sociopolitical issues, or religion to students.” The board gives stickers, signs, and flags as examples of decor that may “unintentionally imply that other teachers who do no not display such messages do not support inclusion for all their students, or that other students are unwelcome.”
Teachers and community members voiced their concerns with the policy and Youngkin’s new model policies regarding how transgender students should be treated at school during the meeting. School Board Chairman Brent Hudson asked police to remove the public from the room after two outbursts. Two people were arrested.
