Almost 75 years ago, Newcastle United arrived in New York for a tour to capitalize on the post-WWII soccer boom in North America. Back then, the papers lauded the club as having a “magical name… a name forever in lights.” Who would’ve thought that three quarters of a century later, those papers would be right. Fresh off a top-4 finish in the Premier League, and with another soccer boom happening in the States, the Magpies were back on our shores with great fanfare. In 1949, they scored a whooping 78 goals on their 10-match trip. On this tour — against their regular PL foes — they hadn’t managed a win at all. That is until Friday’s theatrically perfect comeback against Brighton. 1-0 down in the 85’, and 20-year-old Elliott Anderson dressed up as the hero to score twice before the full time whistle.
