Black mom sues city of Detroit after being wrongfully arrested
A woman is suing the city of Detroit and one of its police officers after she was wrongfully arrested as a result of faulty facial recognition technology. The facial recognition system had mistakenly matched an 8-year-old photo of 32-year-old Porcha Woodruff with video footage of a recent carjacking suspect, despite police having access to her current driver’s license photo, her lawsuit alleges.
On the morning of February 16, 2023, Woodruff was getting her children ready for school when police showed up at her door with a warrant for her arrest, accusing her of carjacking and robbery. Woodruff, who was 8 months pregnant at the time, was arrested and charged with robbery and carjacking. She was released that evening on a $100,000 personal bond.
