Once a month at an Asian American-owned clothing shop in New York’s Lower East Side, racks are traded for a dozen intimate four-top tables filled with a diverse group of 20-something New Yorkers who have gathered to play mahjong. Although a few mahjong clubs already exist, the unique idea behind greentilesocialclub is to create a community for younger players. “People can associate mahjong with something that you mainly play with your family, your aunties and uncles, during the holidays,” Grace Liu said, who is one of the four founders. “What we wanted to create wasn’t something that existed yet.” The club also shows that you can be a part of the Asian American experience, she said. “You don’t have to know Chinese 100% or be close with an extensive Chinese family.
