Millions of American workers could soon see green, as the Biden administration introduced a plan this week to improve pay standards for construction workers on federally funded projects. The Labor Department’s proposal would restore a New Deal-era labor rule that sets a wage floor for construction workers on government-financed projects, including those funded by Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act. The move to modernize the Davis-Bacon Act of 1931 would reestablish a “prevailing wage” for affected construction workers, ensuring that they are paid the going rate that industry peers in their area earn. The Labor Department estimates that the law covers about 1.2 million workers nationwide that could be affected by the proposal. If upheld, a new rule could increase salaries for lower-paid workers on infrastructure projects and in states with weaker worker protections.
