Find your way among the stars. You can do it. ✨
Visible to the unaided eye from the Southern Hemisphere, the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) was named after navigator Ferdinand Magellan. It's located about 200,000 light-years away from Earth.
The colors here represent wavelengths of light across a broad spectrum as captured by various NASA spacecraft. X-rays are represented in purple by NASAChandraXray, infrared views from the Spitzer Space Telescope are shown in red, and visible-light from NASAHubble is in red, green, and blue.
Since SMC is relatively close and bright, astronomers have an easier time observing it than more distant galaxies. X-ray emissions were detected from young stars similar to the mass of our sun according to new Chandra data. Star formations near the “wing” of the galaxy allow astronomers to examine the life cycle of stars and gas.
