When Avery began to walk around 12 months old, her parents noticed a little "hitch in her giddy up" — later diagnosed as bilateral hip dysplasia. Under the expert care of Children's orthopedic surgeon Dr. Paul Esposito, the spunky 2-year-old underwent three eight-hour surgeries as part of her treatment. Because of Avery's experience with the condition, which tends to run in families, Children's team also worked with her parents on a plan for early detection and care for Avery's younger siblings, Maggie and Lillie. All three girls have thrived through their care at Children's, with both younger sisters having utilized Pavlik harnesses for 12 weeks each, and Avery continuing physical therapy to alleviate any discomfort as she becomes more active in sports.
