The Portland Adult Soapbox Derby, possibly Portland’s biggest DIY event, returned to Mount Tabor Saturday for the 24th time. The competition usually attracts between 7,000 and 10,000 spectators, requires over 150 volunteers and includes around 50 teams with five people each. It also features vendors, beer stations and food carts. The race spans less than a mile along a steep road with bends and curves. The soapbox cars can travel up to 50 mph and complete the track in just over a minute. The track speed record was set in 2016 by Justin James, Team Rusty Rocket, at 71.10 seconds. The cars compete in both creativity and speed. Read more and see more photos at the link in our bio. 📸: mark_w_graves #soapbox #soapboxderby #diy #portland #pdx #pnw #theoregonian
