The Great Lakes are truly a remarkable resource that we must protect. About 90 percent of the freshwater in the United States is found in the Great Lakes, and they harbor more than 3,500 species of plants and animals.
With that being said, the University of Toronto found that 90 percent of water samples taken from the Great Lakes over the last 10 years contain levels of microplastic that are unsafe.
According to the study, about 20% of these samples are at the highest level of risk; however, if we act immediately, we may be able to reverse the damage.
