Brad Friedel, the legendary Premier League and USA goalkeeper, discusses his first love: American football.
Brad Friedel is one of the greatest goalkeepers in Premier League history. He made 450 appearances for Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur – the most of any player from North America or South America – and holds the record for the most successive appearances in the competition (310). He is also the Premier League’s fourth-oldest ever player, making his final appearance at the age of 42 years and 176 days.
Friedel enjoyed an excellent international career, too. He made 84 appearances for the United States Men’s National Team (USMT) and went to three World Cups, in 1994, 1998 and 2002.
But as a kid, the football Friedel loved – perhaps not surprisingly, given he was born in Cleveland, Ohio – was American football, not ‘soccer’.
